Quilt Festival - Fall 2009

Hi everyone, I hope you like the quilt I've chosen to share with you. It's a quilt I made for my brother and his wife who are expecting their first baby any day now. It's my Log Cabin Beatrix Potter Quilt. It's more of a lap quilt than a baby quilt because it's quite large. I paper pieced all the log cabin blocks using a template I made myself. The strips finished at 3/4 inch wide. The fabrics I chose came from all the local shops in the region. 6 shops in total. I chose many different kinds of fabrics from modern, country, reproduction and contemporary. I love to mix all these fabrics in my quilts. I just made sure they were all in the same color range. The back of the quilt was more challenging for me. I decided to put a pieced strip across the back, but when I quilted it all, I notice that it was crooked. Well, I didn't want to take it all apart. I had spent 3 hours quilting it on my little sewing machine. So I decided to add some appliques to the back. All the appliques on this quilt were sewn on by hand and used fusible web. I hope you like this quilt. I know my brother and his wife were extremely happy with it. I love this quilt. It really was fun to make and turned out really nice.

Beatrix Potter Log Cabin quilt done!!

Hi everyone, I finished my Beatrix Potter Log Cabin quilt. I just put the last stitches in the binding a few minutes ago. I still need to make a label for it, but otherwise it's done. I really love this quilt. It was fun to buy all those fabrics. I literally did a shop hop for all those fabrics. I purchased fabric from every quilt shop in the Kingston and Brockville area. I paper pieced all the blocks, and machine quilted it myself. It was a challenge to quilt it, but I think it looks good. I didn't have any puckering in the front, and only a little bit of puckering in one corner on the back. So that's pretty good for me. I hope you like it. I love the colors in this one. It just makes me smile to look at it.

Happy Stitching!

A bit of quilting and a new free BOM

Hi everyone! I hope you are all having a great day. Today was a beautiful day. The weather was wonderful. I did spend some time quilting today. I decided to quilt my Beatrix Potter Log Cabin quilt myself. I just couldn't send it out. I don't know why. So, I decided to just go ahead and do it myself. It's far from perfect. I find it hard to quilt anything bigger than a mini quilt on my machine. It's just a basic machine and there's not much room to work. I think my Brother and his wife will like it though. They will know that I worked really hard on this one. I still have to put the binding on it. That will have to wait until tomorrow. I sewed enough for one day.

I was on Dorothy Baker Designs Blog today and found out that she is having a free stitchery BOM called "Sweet Nostalgia" that starts on Sept 15th. She is also having a giveaway. Go check it out. It looks like its going to be really cute.

Finished my log cabin Beatrix Potter quilt top!!!

Hi everyone, I have been working hard the last two days finishing the log cabin Beatrix Potter quilt top. I just love it. This is definitely one of my favorite quilts I've made so far. You can see a close-up of the blocks in my first post about this quilt. It was supposed to be a baby quilt. But it is definitely a lap size quilt. My daughter asked me why I always make my baby quilt so big. I just told her.....I can't help myself. I just keep getting inspired and come up with more ideas, then end up with a lap size quilt. I kind of create as I go. Which can be a problem sometimes. Not having fully developed the plan ahead of time, I often either run out of a certain material, or just, just have enough. Oh well!!! I love this one. I think I'm going to have it professionally quilted. I worked really hard on this quilt and don't want to ruin it with my quilting. I don't feel like quilting it by hand either. Quilting is always a big stress for me. I love making the tops. I could make quilt tops, and just do that. But I also like to finish my projects. I also have to keep my stress level down...since it's really affected my health lately. So, I'm getting it professionally quilted. I'm excited. I can't wait to have it all done. This quilt is a gift for my brother and his wife who are soon to have their first baby. I'm going to make a matching bag with the leftover fabrics. These pictures just don't do this quilt top justice. It looks much better in person. I hope you all like it.

Happy Stitching!!!

A bit of fabric and a few new blocks

Hi everyone, I hope you are all well. Yesterday, my husband was going to pick up some items out of town and going through the town of Brockville, Ontario. So I googled the quilt shops in that town and decided to go look at what they had. So, after my husband was done his business, we stopped in to two shops, Taylor Sewing Centre and Picket Fence Fabrics. They were both very nice stores. I bought a few fabrics from each. It was a lot of fun. I bought fabrics that I could use to make a baby quilt with. I had already purchased some Beatric Potter fabric at Wilton Creek Fabrics in Harrowsmith. I had planned to use this fabric in my quilt. I worked on the blocks for the quilt this morning and this is what I ended up with. I will make four of these. Then do a really nice border. I haven't decided exactly how the border will turn out. But I want it to be really nice. Maybe with some appliques. This picture isn't the best. I think it looks great. I love the colors. I can't wait to see it all done.
Happy Stitching!
