Broken Dishes - A quilt along

Hi everyone,

I've been wanting to share a project with all of you.

Something that we can do together.

I got inspired by this vintage block, that dates back to the early 1800's.

It's the Broken Dishes block.

This block is a relatively simple 4 patch block.

It uses only 4 half square triangles to make the block.

I wanted to show that you don't need a ton of fancy software to design a pattern.

I use graph paper, a pencil, eraser, colouring pencils, and a calculator.

I also wanted to teach you how to adjust the block size depending on the size of quilt you want.

So, come share with me and I hope I can share a bit of my knowledge with you.

Broken Dishes QAL - Part 1

I always just design first,

 then think of the size of the quilt I want to make.

When you use graph paper,

you chose the scale of each square.

If you look at my quilt design below, 

you see that I used four squares to draw one half square triangle (hst) block.

I did this to make it easier to colour the hst's and to make my design bigger on the page.

The border measurements are kept simple.

The first plain border is half the size of one hst.

The second pieced border is the same size as the hst's.

The third plain border is half the size of one hst.

You may wonder why I have the third plain border?

Well, I like my pieced border to stand out.

Especially since I've put so much work into making it.
Here's an example of a border done the same way.

This also allows to make a statement with your binding, if that's what you want.

Each HST block can be made any size.

It can be 2 inches, 3 inches, 4 inches, 6 inches......
(Note: you always need to add 1/2 inch to each measurement for the seam allowance)

I've made up a table with all the measurements to make this quilt.

I've made up the three block sizes in different fabric collections.





I'm making these quilts with fabric from my stash.

The large block is 12.5 inches and made up of some reproduction fabrics.
I cut these HST's with my GO! Cutter and 6.5 inch HST die.

The second block is 8.5 inches and made from Bar Harbor Charm squares.
I have two charm packs of this fabric.
Sew, these are made with the squares method.

I was going to make a tutorial, but this one is very good.
So why do it again.

The third block is 6.5 inches and made up of some Kaffe Fassett scraps and  Kona White.
I used my GO! 3.5 inch die to cut these hst's.
This size is compatible with the GO! baby or GO! Cutter.

Sew if you want to join in and make this quilt with me,
just pick a size.....any size...and start cutting.


I will post a simple tutorial tomorrow on how to make up a block.
After that, I will come back every Tuesday and share my progress with you.
I might even have a linky thing, so that you can share your progress too.

My finished Carpenter's Star quilt!!

I finally have pictures of my finished quilt.

Here they are.

Size: 96 inches square

Fabric used: 

"Black, White and Current" by Color Principle for Henry Glass & Co.

and

Kona cotton solids: white, black and red by Robert Kaufman

Designed, machine pieced, machine quilted by Ariane Kring

Started in April 2011 and completed in July 2011

I completed the Carpenter's Star quilt top!!!

Hi everyone,

I hope you all had a great day.

I am off work this weekend.

It was so nice out the last two days, and I was working.

Now, I'm off and it's raining.

I really shouldn't complain, since there has been so many natural disasters this year.

With the earth quake in Japan, flooding in Quebec and Manitoba, flash fires in Alberta, Tornadoes in the US, it's been a really crazy year for bad weather.

My prayers are with everyone going through those hard times.

Today, I finally finished my Carpenter's Star quilt top.

I tried to take a good picture of it, but it was so windy and wet.

I managed to go out when the rain stopped for a bit.

It's 96 inches square.

So, now I just have to get it quilted.

My Carpenter's Star quilt is getting bigger!

I've been working on my Carpenter's Star quilt.

I just have to do the HST border and then another white border and it will be done.

I can't wait.

It should finish at 96 inches square.

It was a nice break from the rain we have been having.

Some progress...

I'm making some progress on my Carpenter Star quilt.

I ran out of white.

I need 20 6.5 inch white squares and also white strips for the border.

I will go out and get more tomorrow.

I do have a bit more done than shown in this picture, but I will save that for tomorrow.

My version of the Carpenter Star quilt

Hi everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter weekend.

I worked all weekend.

We celebrated our Easter on Monday.

My youngest brother is getting married this summer, and I've been thinking of different patterns to make.

I had one idea, but didn't think i could make it happen in the time I had left.

So, I took my coloring pencils and graph paper out and started coloring.

I was inspired by Mary's Carpenter Star quilt pattern found here.

She used the GO! 6.5 inch half square triangle die and the 6.5 inch square die to make it.

I have the 6.5 inch HST die, but this quilt pattern was for a lap quilt and I wanted a queen.

Here is the drawing I came up with.

I just kept adding hst's around my center Carpenter Star.

I really like the look of it.

This is the fabric I had purchased for the quilt.

It's a Henry Glass collection, and a few kona solids.

I cut all my fabric.

I needed 100 red , 100 black, 148 white triangles.

I cut them using my GO! cutter and the 6.5 inch HST die.

Here they are all cut up.

It went really fast to cut them up.

I did start piecing the center.

Here is what I have done up to now.

I wish my design wall was bigger.

 

As I get further along, I will share my progress with you.

It's my birthday today!!!

Well, today I celebrated my 34th birthday!!

I had a great day!

My husband took me on a quilt shop hop of the three Kingston quilt shops, and the two shops in Brockville.

He didn't come in the stores with me, but patiently waited in the car while I did my shopping.

He was so great!!!

I bought a lot of stuff!

First, I bought two GO! dies, the 1.5 inch inch strip die and the 6.5 inch HST die.

I already started using the 1.5 inch strip die.

I really love this die!

I was leary of buying the strip dies because I had heard some negative comments about them.

But, let me tell you that this die is amazing.

You have to be careful to make sure you put it in the machine straight.

But it cuts so perfectly.

I started making some blocks with my cut up strips. 

Here they are.

I'm using this pattern.

So, that was fun to sew.

But, you are probably wondering what else I bought.

Lots of fabric!!!!!

Most of it was on sale. 

I got 10.5 metres of fabric.

I never buy that much fabric at once.

I usually just by 4 or 5 fat quarters and that's it.

But, it's my birthday, so I'll shop if I want too!!!

The Kona Cotton is for a quilt I'm making for my brother's wedding quilt.

I haven't started it yet.

But, I have the design.

My other photo was taken several years ago, and I've changed.

I don't take a lot of photo's.

I'm kind of camera shy.

But, I thought since it's my birthday, I should have some kind of record.

And you know what? 

I'm good with it.
